Agricultural Science
Agricultural Sciences is the study of the relationship between soils, plants and animals in the production and processing of food, fibre, fuel and other agricultural commodities that have economic, aesthetic and cultural value. Agricultural Sciences is an integrated science. It combines knowledge and skills from Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics and Economics. This subject must be seen within the holistic science framework rather than as an isolated science. It is strongly recommended that Agricultural Sciences be combined with Mathematics, Physical Sciences and/or Life Sciences.
The main topics in the Agricultural Sciences curriculum consist of: Soil Science, Plant Studies, Animal Studies, Agricultural Economics, Basic Agricultural Chemistry, Basic Genetics and Biological Concepts, Sustainable Natural Resource Utilisation and Agro-ecology.
Application
The subject is relevant towards Higher Education qualifications such as: Veterinary Medicine, Geology, Agricultural Engineering, Management Sciences, Life and Physical Sciences, Food Science, Food Technology or Food Engineering, Consumer Science, Human Nutrition, Environmental and Natural Resource Management, Dietetics and Rural Development. Some career options to consider are careers in farming, horticulture, agricultural teaching, extension officer in agriculture, marketing services and the agricultural business, and applying entrepreneurial skills.
