Consumer Studies
Consumer Studies lays a foundation for consumer education to develop learners into responsible and informed consumers. It teaches learners about responsible and informed consumer behaviour regarding food, clothing, housing, furnishings and household equipment. The subject aims to teach learners to make informed decisions and to make optimal use of resources to improve human well-being. In the practical component of the subject, learners have an opportunity to produce and market different products. This also prepares learners to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to produce and market food, clothing, or furnishing products to satisfy consumer needs.
The curriculum includes the following topics: the consumer, food and nutrition, design elements and principles, fibre and fabrics, clothing, housing and entrepreneurship.

Besides being an enriching and rewarding subject, Consumer Studies is a valuable life skill with practical applications for learners. Beyond preparing learners for relevant career fields, the subject equips one with knowledge and skills that can be applied to everyday life. Learners passionate about food, clothing, housing, soft furnishings and interiors can benefit from taking Consumer Studies. The subject is linked to various career fields such as consumer services, event management, product development, quality assurance, dietician, fashion design, hospitality and interior design.
