History

History is the study of change and development in society over time. The study of history enables us to understand how past human action affects the present and influences our future and allows us to evaluate these effects. History is about learning how to think about the past, which affects the present, in a disciplined way. It is a process of enquiry. Therefore, it is about asking questions of the past: What happened? When did it happen? Why did it happen then? What were the short-term and long-term results? It involves thinking critically about the stories people tell us about the past, as well as the stories that we tell ourselves.

Application

History is an interesting and relevant subject that teaches learners valuable skills such as research, critical examination, and argument formation in both written and oral formats. These skills make history students problem-solvers who can hypothesise and seek solutions, analyse evidence, organise and synthesise ideas, and present complex information accurately. The historical thinking skills learned are valuable in any profession, enabling individuals to think, assess information and opinions, and communicate logically, clearly, and convincingly. The study of history provides preparation for a wide range of careers, including legal, political science, social sciences, journalism, teaching, and lecturing.
