Music

Music is the art of organising sounds and silence, expressing intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of human experience. Music is an art form that can be combined with other forms and is often enhanced by technology. It can communicate a broad range of historical, cultural and socioeconomic ideas and issues. Music has the power to unite groups and mobilise community involvement to improve quality of life, social healing and affirm human dignity.

By studying Music, Grade 10 to 12 learners will develop technical control over one or more musical instrument(s) or voice, performance skills by way of performing a wide variety of musical works in solo and group (ensemble) contexts, ranging from Western art music and jazz to indigenous African music (IAM),  ability to read music notation(s), creativity through improvisation and working with own music ideas, understanding of existing works of music with regard to compositional techniques used, application of musical elements in existing musical works and placing these in a specific historical and cultural context, awareness of various musical traditions, and appreciation for various styles of music.

Application

Music can provide learners with knowledge and skills to prepare them for various careers in the field, such as performing, songwriting, composing, live music entertainment, music education, music production, artist management, marketing and PR or music journalism. Additional education and training in music can deepen one's understanding of music theory, history, composition, performance techniques, and technical skills in areas such as music production and recording. Studying music also develops a range of transferable skills, including discipline, perseverance, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication, which can be valuable in various professions beyond music. These skills can be applied to areas such as leadership, project management, and critical thinking, making individuals well-rounded and adaptable in their chosen career paths.
